Finding out what is actually wrong
A diagnosis begins with a test that is done properly and read by someone who knows what they are looking at. Imaging, laboratory, cardiac, pulmonary and endoscopic testing all run inside OSPA-Farmers’ Medical Center, so the test your doctor orders, the result, and the consultation that follows do not send you across town.
Below is where each kind of test is done, what it covers, and when that department is open.
What your doctor is most likely to order
Radiography for chest, bones, abdomen, spine and sinuses. Quick, low dose, and very often the only image your doctor needs to act on.
Live imaging of the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, soft tissue and blood flow, and the safe way to follow a pregnancy. No radiation, no injection, nothing to recover from.
A rotating X-ray beam turned into detailed slices of bone, soft tissue and blood vessels. Fast enough for an emergency, detailed enough to plan an operation.
A low-dose breast X-ray that can pick up changes years before anyone could feel them. Screening and diagnostic mammograms, read by a radiologist.
An electrocardiogram records the electrical signal that makes your heart beat. Ten electrodes pick it up, and the tracing shows the rhythm, the rate, and whether any part of the heart muscle is under strain.
Five places a diagnosis can start
Radiology and Imaging
Ultrasound, digital and mobile X-ray, mammogram, C-arm fluoroscopy, and a 128-slice CT scanner covering CT angiograms, CT-guided biopsy and calcium scoring.
Department of Pathology
Eleven testing sections: hematology, clinical chemistry, clinical microscopy, immunology and serology, histopathology, microbiology, blood bank, drug testing, rHIVda and drinking water analysis.
Cardiac and Vascular
ECG, treadmill exercise test, Holter and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, 2D echocardiography with Doppler, and carotid and extremity duplex scans.
Pulmonary Testing
Pulmonary function testing and arterial blood gas analysis, measuring how well the lungs move air and exchange oxygen.
Endoscopy and GI
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and liver biopsy, with biopsy and polypectomy performed during the procedure.
Not sure which test you need?
Call the main line and we will point you to the right department, or ask at the out-patient desk when you arrive.
Before you come in
The laboratory and X-ray run around the clock. The cardiac, pulmonary and endoscopy services keep clinic hours, and the cardiac and endoscopy units stop accepting patients an hour before closing, so it is worth calling ahead for those.
